When I go to speak to kids at a juvenile detention center, it is very intimidating no matter how may times I visit. The kids that sit in front of me are there because they have been involved in gangs, drugs, assault, and sometimes murder. They are surrounded by guards as they sit in their chairs. These kids are hard. They have learned to put up a tough exterior to prevent others from getting to know them. Before I can share the Gospel with these kids, it’s important that I break down their walls a little. These kids are always looking to find out what my angle is. They want to know what’s in it for me. When they find out that I donate my books to come share the message of Jesus Christ with them they start to let their guard down.
I use my martial arts gifts and humor to break them down further. The clip below shows me doing a demonstration with a former gang member that was incarcerated at a facility I visited last week. I had him point the gun at me and challenged him to pull the trigger before I could take it away from him. You can see what happened next. . .
How about you? Have you ever tried to share the Gospel with a teen? What interesting things do you do to reach the youth in your world? We would love to hear from you on this post or with anything else you have to share.
